Matilda: no child's 'play'

By Sanjeev Singh Bariana Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 7 - A play by school children is usually perceived as a 'cute little experiment' but staging of the Roald Dahl's bestseller 'Matilda' at the Tagore theatre where this evening would have easily put many a professional to shame.

Lushin Dubey and Bubbles Sabharwal, both from the Kids World Theatre group in Delhi, have successfully turned the absolute raw talent of Vivek High School into confident, reactive adults, much ahead for their age. The acting of a few of them was not that of obedient kids following instructions but that of 'real characters'.

It would be unfair not to give due credit to the music. Composed by Babush Santana, it runs like a thread joining pearls of various acts, more so pronounced in the special effects. Choreography by Ashlesy Lobo and Ronica Jacob is also worth mentioning.

Matilda played by Ankita Muttereja, Miss Trunchbull played by Somveer Anand and Mr Harinder Dadhwal by Aspandeep Singh shone like gems, which if polished better can go a long way in theatre.

While it is too early to comment whether children theatre has come of age, the play should certainly act as a catalyst to those who work with children.
